Dennis Coffey’s music has represented the heartbeat of Detroit since the ‘60s, running a thread through the city’s soul, funk and disco classics and, later, through hip hop thanks to a clutch of seminal Coffey breaks. The Detroit connection loomed large on Coffey’s latest self-titled album with a handful of classic Motor City songs and guest appearances from local heroes Mayer HawthorneMick Collins (The Dirtbombs) and more. Coffey and Strut now take the link a step further, enlisting a vibrant array of talent from the city’s rich electronic and hip hop community for a remix collection of tracks from the album. We assembled some of the most talented artists from the Detroit area, all influenced by Coffey’s work, for a collection of reinterpretations and remixes of his new tracks. Just some more top quality Motor City funk for your listening enjoyment.
“Dennis Coffey is a legend, not merely for the timeless music he made in the past but also for the fact that he continues to be musically relevant to this day. Check out his new album for the pudding proof.”
-Recloose

“It’s an honor to be a part of a project associated with Dennis Coffey.”
 -14KT

“Dennis is someone who not only was a part of some of the greatest songs ever recorded but also helped create the
sound that influenced much of the hip hop music that we love so much. And he’s still creating timeless music.”

-Jamall Bufford of Athletic Mic League

Dennis Coffey will be touring internationally throughout 2011.

HIT IT & QUIT IT – June 6, 2011… JAZZY JAY SPECIAL

Posted on by Jans | Leave a comment

This past Monday we had a very special guest drop by the studio, the one & only Jazzy Jay! Special thanks to our good friend Eric Orr (pictured above) who hooked the whole thing up. What an honour!

Jazzy had been in Auckland for a couple of shows and was happy just to hang out and chat, but we weren’t gonna have that, after all, it’s not every day we have one of the founding fathers of Hip Hop in the studio. So after a bit of gentle encouragement, we managed to talk Jazzy into dropping an impromptu guest mix on us! It’s a wild ride through many styles, as you’d expect from an originator like Jazzy.

We hope you enjoy it! Also note: the mix starts half way through part 1, and runs most of the way through part 2.
(Our producer Reggie B wasn’t able to track down all the labels on Jazzy’s mix, but did a great job to even keep up with his breakneck speed! Almost 50 tracks in 50 minutes!)

HIT IT!

HIT IT & QUIT IT – 30 MAY, 2011

Posted on by Jans | Leave a comment

Welcome. It’s been a while since we’ve had a tailor made guest mix for the show, so it’s a great honour to host a very special mix this week from the one & only Christopher Tubbs of Heads Down & Untracked Records.
Tubbs is a man of many talents, and has been carving out a niche for himself as the voice of proper leftfield/disco/house/call-it-what-you want (!) on the excellent Heads Down blog site, which has hosted great in depth interviews with the likes of Ashley Beedle, The Idjut Boys, Robert Owens and many more.
He also signed my very first solo Frank Booker record for Untracked, so one of us owes the other a drink, I’m not sure who though!
His mix is uninterrupted on part two of the show, no chat, just pure heat! Part one features a 20 minute tribute to the late, great Gil Scott Heron (RIP) and an interview with Recloose, live from Detroit at 2.30AM local time. Ooof!
Enjoy. Hit It!
